When you set foot in a place to begin a life you don’t know what will become of that life. Or maybe you do. You are not aware of the changes that take place and you might not expect any surprises, but we all know that life is full of them.
As an 8 year-old I never expected to live in America or even to leave my land. I never imagined that my time was going to be very short and unfortunately I didn’t know how precious life was.
Right now life is acceptable for me. I have accepted the past and the present and I don’t regret any part of my life.
On Saturday we will have a short visit to New York. It will be my first visit to the city. My brother from Blegium will join us. I will probably write from New York, so come back and read the rest of my Summer’s journey.
I wasn’t either. As an 8 year old I was more concerned about being hit by an errant fastball, driving the tractor straight and whether it would rain so maybe my brother and I wouldn’t have to change irrigation pipes. My brother was six so it was probably worse for him. He dealt with it and runs the farm now. I chose to run away in a manner and join the Air Force. I regret not staying but don’t regret all of the hard work I avoided by leaving. Military life isn’t easy, even in the AF, but it doesn’t come close to farming, unless you’re actually fighting a war. Plus, it’s getting more and more difficult to make a decent living running a farm. I do enjoy “playing” farmer for a few days when I visit the place I call home.:)
Anyway, have a safe and fun trip…
cheers,
Dick
